Exquisite Mother-of Pearl and Acrylic Inlays
Among other key distinctions, the SG Standard stands out from its no-frills kid sister, the SG Special, because of the fine mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and holly inlays that decorate its headstock. The SG Standard also boasts figured acrylic trapezoid inlays along its rosewood fingerboard.
'50s Rounded Neck Profile
No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional '50s neck profile--found on the SG Standard--is the thicker, rounder, more time-honored profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic late '50s Gibson models. The neck is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.
Set-Neck Construction
Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on Les Pauls and SGs are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart--a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar ensures a "wood-to-wood" contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.
Gibson's 490R AND 498T Pickups
The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. This new genre's players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup, and Gibson answered the call with the 490T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm), humbuckers with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, but with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490's ideal complement. Taking the 490 one step further, the 498 swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.
Solid Mahogany Body
Probably the most central of all SG features is its solid mahogany body. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson's woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of "equilibrium," where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods' machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that the SG will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Body and Finish
Body
- Species The body of each Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute is crafted from chambered mahogany, joined to a solid carved maple top with ultra-strong Franklin Titebond 50 glue. These classic tonewoods have yielded some of the most legendary sounds in the history of rock.
- Tonal Characteristics Mahogany is a medium-dense wood with excellent resonance and superior sustain, and it offers a rich, round, warm tone, but with plenty of high-end sheen and good midrange presence. Add a solid maple top, and the guitar’s tone is enhanced with added clarity, sustain and definition. The body’s chambering also enhances its mellow acoustic resonance, and adds further air to the midrange content.
- Design The Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute follows the classic lines of the Les Paul Standard, with a gently arched top and a single cutaway on the treble side of the neck/body joint for improved upper-fret access. The body’s back is routed with a number of chambers which serve to both reduce overall weight, and to enhance the guitar’s resonance.
- Average Weight The average weight of a Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute body is 5.13 lbs, which is in the normal range for a Gibson guitar.

- Tolerance When fitting the neck and body together, we take advantage of our precise measuring equipment so that all angles, pitches and alignments maintain a tolerance within .005 of an inch. Not only does this help to keep your guitar in tune but it also maintains proper string alignment relative to the fingerboard.
- Joint Gibson uses what is known as the Mortis & Tenon joint to bind neck to body so that the two pieces form one solid unit. This time-tested technique has been used for millennia in all the great woodworking arts—from shipbuilding to cabinetry—to create one solid wood unit from two separate sections, and has been proven to yield a stronger neck and body than if the instrument was made from a single piece of wood. - Nut Material The nut on the Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute is made from Corian, which is mainly composed of acrylic polymer. This popular synthetic alternative to bone offers a very durable material, delivers enhanced sustain, and holds the tolerances of the precision cuts made in the slotting process. It is installed into the top surface of the neck, butting up to the end of the fingerboard to ensure proper tone and sustain transfer, and its nut slots are cut with Gibson’s PLEK system to ensure precise fit, break angle, and string spacing. Nut Width The width of the nut on the Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute is approximately 1.695”, the traditional nut width of Gibson electric guitars.
Pickups and Electronics
To give it the vintage look and meaty, raw sound that this rock ’n’ roller deserves, the Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute carries two Gibson USA P-90 pickups, which are wired through the traditional four-knob Les Paul control array, with a three-way Switchcraft toggle selector.- Pickups Model The Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute is equipped with a pair of Gibson’s P-90 single-coil pickups, as used on original Les Pauls from 1952-56, and on the first Les Paul reissue of 1968. Gibson USA’s P-90s are acclaimed as the finest reproductions of original 1950s P-90s available today.
- Magnet Material Gibson’s P-90 pickups use Alnico V magnets for a rich, warm response with plenty of bite.
- Tonal Characteristics Although they are among Gibson’s oldest pickup designs, P-90s have retained devoted followers for more than 60 years. These single-coil pickups have about the same output power as vintage PAF humbucking pickups, with a little more punching power in the midrange, added high-end bite, and a raw, slightly grainy voice overall that makes them perfect for rock and roll, blues, roots-rock, and countless other styles of music.
Gibson’s P-90 pickups use Alnico V magnets for a rich, warm response with plenty of bite. - Volume Controls The Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute uses an individual volume control for each pickup, which consists of a quality 300k linear potentiometer for a smooth, natural volume roll-off.
- Tone Controls The Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute features individual tone controls for each pickup. The pots have ohm readings of 500k and are non-linear.
- Toggle Switch The Les Paul Studio ’60s Tribute features one three-way Switchcraft toggle switch. In the down position, only the bridge pickup is active. In the middle position, both pickups are active. In the up position, only the neck pickup is active.
- Output Jack The guitar features a 1/4” output jack made by Switchcraft. Its super heavy duty construction holds your guitar cable securely in place.
